How can boxer engines have overhead cams when the camshafts are on the sides?

Well "Dual Slightly-to-the-side Cam" doesn't quite have the same ring to it...

It's still overhead in comparison to the piston head.

The heads are rotated sideways. Cams are still on top of the heads.

Technically...they are over the head. or in the head. whatever.

The elbow pads of cams.

Make it staaaaahp!

No, the cams are on the sides. It's like making a chair with the seat on the side. It might have been originally on the top, but it sure as shit isn't anymore.

No, it would have to be on top of the block for that to happen.

If you put a hat on your head then lay down, the hat is still over your head.

Put a hat in your head. Lay down. Is the hat still overhe... Damnit, no it's not!!
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:41 |

Those look like they sit on top of the head.
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:45 |

Not at all. They're definitely on the sides
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:45 |

No, the hat falls off.
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:46 |

On the sides.

It's a touque. It doesn't fall off.

In that case how can V type engines have overhead cams when the camshafts are tilted?
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:47 |
|
Aren't they above the crank?
![]() 12/09/2014 at 23:52 |
|
Then don't call them that. You will be correct if you call the cam in head.

Duke, you know what it means....... Overhead cams = cams are located linearly opposite the crankshaft with respect to the cylinder bore.

What should they be known as? SHC=Side Head Cam? Doesn't sound right but I see your point, they can only be OHC if the motor is rotated 90 deg along the crankshaft axis but then one set will be UHC(Under Head Cam)!

If cars with boxer engines are driven properly, half the cams are overhead.

OK, Jaden Smith.

A major percentage of the cam is directly above the head.

Nex'ta head cams
